astroid- the gabba gulch
Release StoreTags: too much, goddamn, obnox, fun
-->
so, here's something i did after hearing the glorious terminal 11 for the first time, and maybe after digesting some late autechre and richard devine.
brutal criticisms are quite welcome. this was done primarily with samples and the g2. lots of triggering and midi wangling.
BRUTALIZE ME! it's a work in progress-note the shitty end.
especially tips about pacing, mix, are appreciated. I know this stuff isn't for everyone.

first let me say that i listened to "the lion sleeps tonight" by the tokens(?) 4 times before i gave this recording my full attention:
you certainley jump right into it.
i really like the change at 1:33. bringing that sweet pad back in, but now with more room to breathe.
and of course 2:02 is a nice change, a nice easily identifiable melody.
i know youre into all that skitter skatter beatzzz!1111o0 so i wont comment on them, except to say that i HATE THAT SHIT.
you have this stutter trick where you make a bass drum and snippet of notes get 'stuck' and repeat for a second or two, you make good use of it in this song.
i like your reverb, always.
the beginning (before 1:33) is too busy for my soft little ears. i'd like to get to know it a bit better before it just starts blasting me with electronic tornadoes. but there are some very interesting sounds in this part. in particular i like the cymbalish sounds that are off to the left a little, very nice sounds and sequences. and you also make some high quality blips in this section.
several incredible things happen at 1:27.
how many tracks is this?

this is better than autechre. Your rhythm programming is really tight. I hear some devine maddness with that panning and triggering. Keep up the good work.

My criticism echoes jdg's: silences. needs more. Or at least, it needs more space.
When you run drums and synths through the delays/glitch/lofi effects they get all these added square-wave overtones, and it becomes very crowded. Its crowded both in notes/percussion as well as frequencies. One thing I always loved about powernoise acts like COnverter is they could add 5 or 6 things together, each with their own huge distortion, and each was distinct. I think what you've got here, all the sounds have a tendency to intrude into the space of every other sound. The kick drums kinda sound like snares, the snares get a buzz that makes them sound like notes, the melodic notes get zapped until they sound like percussion.
Now, having said all of that, overall this track is awesome. its intricate, and all that blending I just complained about... is actually pretty damned cool.
I just wish it had some more dynamics.... seriously, its wicked cool and my only mean asshole crisitcism is that it could use some dynamics. I love how the sounds belnd together, but I want them to take me for a ride, not get shoved into my ears. I suspect you can craft some really wicked grooves out of the tornado of sounds...
your synthesizer tracks do that for me, you play all these crazy notes but over here they are kinda slow, then they become crazy fast arpeggios going up up up up, then they are kinda doing random drunk walks, then they spin down down down JUMP UP back down... over to the left now they do some swirls, now they lock step with the drums, and now they echo the drums, now they are off doing something entirely different. I want the crazy chopped up sounds you are collecting here to do the same thing as your keyboard.

I kind of wish there was a little more interaction with the bass and the melody. I was trying to find something structurally or melodically to hold onto in the storm of beats and craziness.
The arpeggiated melody works too fast for me to hold onto it, and the bassline kind of helps, but is a little too same-y or sparse. I don't know if a lot of it is generated by the sequencers on the G2, but that may be the issue.
I definitely think this track has awesome potential but there needs to be a little more of a thread to keep the listener engaged.
