--> Equipment: Max/MSP, ES-1, guitar, old records and Logic.

The first track I've posted here using my current laptop (and the first where I've incorporated Max/MSP). There are parts where I feel the drum programming is weaker than others, and as ever I feel that it lacks something, so your honest comments and criticisms are more than welcome.

There's quite a lot hidden in the mix, it was hard to strike a balance between subtlety and total invisibilty with a lot of the parts but it's something I plan to work on.

I hope you enjoy.

i hear it!.

interesting indeed.
it could have gone on alot longer.

Thanks jdg. I'm kind of glad that you thought it should have been longer, I get bored of my own stuff very quickly so it's good to know when to extend some ideas.

Wow. Very interesting and dense with lots of layers.
Not sure I caught everything the first time through, so download I go for more listens!
I wasn't expecting the abrupt ending. I was starting to sink into things just when you dropped it out.
Look forward to hearing more. Thanks for sharing!

Peace

i think the tones and sound design are so interesting that the beat programming might be able to get way more steady, solid, and huge. like a real SHLOOOOOM CAAAH FLHASHLOOOOOOOMphhrrCRAAAAAH kinda thing

very cool, I love the clean guitar, gives it a vintage feel.

Thanks everybody.

I agree about the ending being too abrupt, chimplogic. I'm considering making this part of something longer (an EP perhaps) which might help alleviate that.

Interesting idea astroid; I mess around with the beat so much, making it steadier might, if anything, make it more unusual. I'll definitely give that a shot.

Glad that you liked the guitar Artisgreg, it's DI'ed and I tried not to hide that with any amp simulators (I really should pick up a microphone to record it instead).

Thanks again everybody, you're all way too kind.

I liked this a lot! It kinda has an arabian vibe mixed in with everything else. The pauses in the percussion are really effective.

Thanks Roshi. The arabian vibe might come from the scale that I used, I generally just pick a random one on my guitar and try and write a song around it.

the drum programming is the weakest part to me, the hi-hit, high frequency stuff in particular. its not overly complex and all over the place like the apfhexxxxbeats but its not just a simple pattern that a drummer would play or whatever and for some reasone i want it to be one or the other. did you program the snare on the es-1? i think the snare programming has some excellent bits, but they should be saved and used more conservatively.
hah, so i guess im telling you to make your beat more boring.

most all of the sounds are fucking great, but i think you already know that. except that high pitched percussion, that clicking. it hurts me.

i like the voices at :44, those two quick chunks

this is my favorite from you since 'the apple song.' which is still my most favorite.

Many thanks for the detailed comments energygiant.

I've been conflicted by drums for a long time now; it's like I don't really want to be like anybody that I listen to (whether they are a real drummer or programmer), and that kind of leads me to doing things that often come out kind of stunted. I guess what I'm saying is that it needs work, but I plan to try a bit more experimenting before I go either way.

And I agree totally on the hi-hats, I actually tried to tone them down a bit when mixing but I think it's going to have to be a case of re-recording (and yes, all the drums are from my ES-1).

So many thanks, it's very insightful and reassuring.

no problem, i'm a fan of your recordings. the apple song sounds like no one else.

this is the stuff that makes em411 great, thanks much for sharing, and keep it up!

didn't notice this one on the front page until now, love it! the guitar sounds great for being di'd and there are certainly a lot of subtle details in there. i look forward to hearing an e.p or something of your work in the future.

Thanks for the kind words blingdonkey and tmns.

P.S. I was able to set-up my PayPal account a few days ago, now I'm just waiting for them to process my details. I look forward to ordering your album in the next couple of weeks, tmns.
