When you live alongside the trains, you can either let it get to you, or you can learn to appreciate their musicality. We basically cohabit with trains, so I have chosen the later. Sometimes late at night, distant wheel squeaks can overlap into ethereal trainsong, but mostly, their music is much more visceral (and louder).
The piece of music below started with some field recordings of trains, followed by numerous recordings of rail-side paraphernalia in order to create percussion. The rythm section is entirely made from such objects as poles, pilons, fences, signs, sleepers, gravel (snare-like) and concrete (bass like). These where traced over the field recordings of passing trains to create the grooves (the overlapping percussion and train samples sounded funky, but were later discarded from the piece much to my partners dissapointment). I added to the mix a glockenspiel made from discarded rail pins and a few orchestral instruments, to give it sweep.
You might accuse me of being too literal, in basing a piece of music about trains on samples made from the rail. Buy it does captures the sounds and rythms quite well so I am glad I persued the idea.

I just tried to test this and it is playing an old piece I posted, instead of the new one. So if the piece that plays doesnt sound much like anything to do with trains, follow the link above to my blog and listen there. It seems to play the correct piece on the em411 radio though.

I cleared my cache and tried again. It works now .
Also, taking your advice energygiant, I thought the percussion was too low in the mix, losing the original intent, so I beefed it up and uploaded it to the link. Now it kicks a little more.
The strings are from my roland orchestra module. But they are not great and I am UNHAPPY!!! I would really appreciate advice about the best place to get a good set of pre-made instruments. There are just so many options! What are the best shared sample banks on line, what is a good software sampler with access to a variety of quality sounds?

yeah i dont really like the string sound either. tried multitracking your accordion? my original thought was that they string should be electronic sounds, and by electronic i dont mean generated by your computer.

Hmmm.... my accordian.... Not such a crazy idea. Or I have an organ which might create a similar feeling of space that the strings do.
