Tripnik - Piano Drone Live
Release

--> the only live piano drone I've done, and one of the very latest. I played the piano backstage (so that the dry piano wouldn't be heard) while processing with that "justine's patch" I posted awhile ago. the performance was projected into the hall, live, and the audio patched out to some of the biggest speakers I'll probably play on in awhile.

[EDIT] I think the mp3 got truncated for some reason...it loops before the piece actually ends for me. Perhaps, use this link instead?

Here's a link to the mp3...it starts with a lot of silence right off the bat that I've been too lazy to chop off.

[edit...actually posted the link this time, doi] link

What was the dynamic like with the audience? How did they respond to the performer being backstage? Was there video? And why did you choose this method rather than manipulating prerecorded piano samples?

Love it, of course! Awesome work as always! (^_^)b

yeah, when I said projected, I meant that a video feed of the performance was being projected into the hall live, so they did see it. I didn't want to use prerecorded samples because I wanted this to be 100% completely live and improvised. In general, there was a feel of detachment I think. The audio was "synthetic", and the visual aspect of the performance was also filtered and framed via the lens of the camera. I positioned the camera so that people would have the most complete view of my screen/hardware/hands, and the piano, so they could see EXACTLY what was going on. Since electronic music at my school was somewhat enigmatic, I was hoping that by seeing the process from recording to manipulation, that people would be able to understand the underlying structure better. I can't vouch for performer/audience response etc since everyone will clap at the end, and tell you "good job" afterwards, but I think it went well. I can send you a video of the performance if you want...it'd be too big to post online though, I think. It would be a video of a video feed, and a digital recording of a digital recording ;)

this is great, i loved the slow development of it, even thought the silence at the start worked

I still love this. This piece really developed and changed as you worked with it - by this performance I think you had come up with a really dynamic and fluid approach. Aces as always!

the suspense is killing me. tell me the rest of the story!
that's what this does to me - great eery city of lost children sounding thematic piece.
its creepy in a "ooh i can't wait to see what happens next" sort of way...!
i feel kinda like i'm approaching a weird dream sequence in a movie that is a bit dark....

Interesting piece of music. I like it.
