--> thiss was inspired by implex grace, hecanjog, bsr, tmns, roshi and all the other fine em411 ambient/noise/drone folks. maybe a little fennesz.

when i wasn't having nookie regularly, i'd occasionally have these wild water dreams, where i'd be swimming in huge waves around islands. huge waves.

rather good. i can imagine this being waves. i like how the sound surrounds, like in water. yeah.

def see what you're saying there. it's the portamento that offends me a little.

what i can't figure out is if i want to leave it skeletal and epic like this or to add some acoustic guitar lines in there. the latter would probably sound more like me. dunno. what you think, people?

"waves" have too much a "in your face" attitude for my tastes... i think it's too skeletal, dunno about an acoustic guitar tho. love the micro-melody in the background - which becomes foreground in the end actually. (irony) i think i cannot fully appreciate this one cos i don't know fennezs (/irony)

hahah, yeah, all it's missing is that cowbell electrobass has suggested. I think it's wonderful, but I would like to hear some clean sound contrasting the ragged bits.

I'm with jdg, try athe acoustic guitar. You can always delete it. I think it'd make this more you and more unique. Can you play all your crazy microtones on guitar?

My only suggestion: do all the "waves" have to be roughly the same size? There seems to be about 5-7 warbles that precede each of the foreground wave sounds, then there's this "half-note" length of noise/loud tone (until the last one, which seems to stretch out)... the tail end seems to vary in length but I think that might be due to the "background" synth people are talking about.

Anyhow, you give us this basic shape

in different pitches.

I'd like to see more variation.

Maybe replace a few of those synth notes with a sample... just a recording of the synth.
Then you could get a few low notes that are more like:
||||||||/********____________
and a few high notes more like:
|||/**__
without being totally predictable. That might lend some weight / reduce some weight where needed to that main synth sound.

Double dumbasses like myself need to be shown, told and led.

pretty cool sir. reminds me of the squarepusher tune "mutilation colony'.. which is definitely one of my favorite squarespusher tunes. you should check it out.


the harmonic movement is sparse but effective, i like that approach.

it's a whole (that's right, a-hole) orchestral piece done on the gigastudio, and then run through various reverbs, distortions, and lofi plugins, mostly pluggo stuff. then, there was some manual gating, a trip through the fromagge filter for the melody, and some backwardsing of storsh tails (that's the stutter thing) the harsh storsh is the waveshaper in pluggo.

good ideas, mlbot. the question is if i'd learn more by finishing this, or by banging out a bunch more sketches. hm.
