Chris Rottler - Das Funktionierende Leben (Deer's Lost in the Woods Mix)
Heya! This is a work-in-progress mix of a remix I'm doing for my pal Chris Rottler. Very poppy, very dark, definitely on the cheesy side of things but I'm trying to walk a fine line. Please let me know anything that strikes you about it - I have a long list of issues myself, here's just some of them: some of the vocal bits aren't perfectly lined up yet, it's a real bitch but I'm getting there. the hihats and bd's aren't quite there yet.. must humanize the piano more (a lot more? you tell me!), mix is rough, Vocoder is always dubious (is it though?) etc. Anyways, I'm pretty thrilled by this actually, but it needs _your_ input to really shine (uh-oh). It might be bound for a 12" release as well, so the input is doubly appreciated.
stuff used: nord modular g2 (vocoder inspired by a recent thread actually!), evolver, machinedrum-uw, live6.
If people care about the lyrics I'll try my best to translate them.
Enjoy!

OMG I lurve it.
Love the vocoder (of course) and the bassline is dope.
Overall you've got a great mood going on... all the space you have left by not filling up the rhythm and bass and stuff and the end result:
MOODY!
great mix.
My comment: there's a couple of moments where a really clanky snare kicks in... i wish the drum machine elemnts totally dropped out for 1-2 measures when that big clanky snare kicks in... replace all the drum machine bits with samples of clanks and smashes... just for a measure or two, then return to the drum machine. That might be neat.

i really liked it till the vocals kicked in. guess i'm just not into vocal electronica. however, the odd buzzy stuff, teh drum sounds, the syncopation, etc, i liked all that.

thanks guys - it's a remix of a "classic" band arrangement pop-rock song, so the vocals is what I constructed this all around - at first I just wanted to use fragments and make it a click-house clubtune but then opted for a more "symphonic" (for my standards) approach - the result I suppose.. yeah. vocal electronica.. synthpop really
ml, you mean the big hit around 3:00? I'll try isolating it a bit, I need to lead into the hihats soon after that though.. will play with it tomorrow.

hey, I'm bored, here goes a rough translation of the very much emo lyrics.. of course, the double-entendres etc don't really work in english.. sounds a lot more mundane this way somehow:
the functioning/functional life
and everything seems so simple
the small change for two beers
and the wind, howling with us
what of this is real again
I need this exit more than ever
a small reflexive romance (errr.. that's a tough one to translate..)
and it won't hurt anymore
and it won't hurt anymore
a lot of people here look just like you do
just like you most of them want to leave
just like you most of the people here
want to fall asleep with someone familiar
the whole world looks just like you do
yeah, naturally, just like you
and you can find something like yourself
almost everywhere, everywhere
almost everywhere, everywhere
almost everywhere, everywhere
the functioning/functional life
and everything seems so simple
the small change for two beers
and the wind, howling with us
what of this is real again
I need this exit more than ever
a small reflexive romance
and it won't hurt anymore
and it won't hurt anymore
the functioning/functional life
and everything seems so simple
the small change for two beers
and the wind, howling with us
(lyrics by chris rottler)

Dig it alot except the piano, and the pads. To me theyre too much and too big considering the "humility" of the vocals/lyrics.
Quality work nevertheless.
