About to purchase a dedicated live & studio rig, running live & cubase. Wondering whether to format and install Win XP or not.

realistically, we can't run XP forever. Are there any advantages to keeping vista?

I bought a new PC about 6 months ago, and it came with Vista, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Right out of the box it was kind of annoying, because a lot of the typical Windows stuff was in different places.

When I tried installing my music software and devices, it became a real nightmare. Nothing worked. After days of googling error message and dealing with my machine rebooting and blue screening at random, I said screw it and put XP on the machine, and everything worked again.

it's garbage.
and i've been pro M$ all the way since NT workstation, ignoring the pretentiousness of linux/mac types -- but once vista came out, the fascism broke my heart, and i adopted stalin's macbook pro. i love my macbook pro, and so should you. plus, with bootcamp + parallels running xp, you can simply alt-enter into your favorite Microsoft Himler apps when need be.

i'm buying a new laptop from pctorque.com with no OS installed. coz i aint dealing with Vista until 70% of vista users say it's good to go... buying laptops without OS installed is the best way to go anyway. no pre-installed demos and crappy stupid application to deal with... and Sager laptops rule!

it has it's good days and unfortunately a lot more bad days in my house. my install of vista doesn't have any major problems, but a plethora of smaller issues and a mind of its own. getting sonar 7 to talk to it was a bit of a chore, and there are all sorts of conflicts that re-appear each time i reboot. performance is ok, although it does take about 5 seconds to consign a small file (say 512b) to the recycle bin.

don't think i'll ditch it just yet.

It makes you wonder what the crap went wrong. I mean, they had a lot of time to work on this version and it seems to suck so bad. I guess all the Xbox stuff got in the way maybe but still I thought they were a big enough company. How can Apple make computers and iphones and ipods and crap and go a decent job on all of them and Microsoft can't.

ms got too big.

they just run in circles anymore it seems.

what do you do when youve got the whole market and ppl feel using your product is enevitable? i guess if your ms you put ur thumb up ur butt and try and chase around companies that are actually inovating, and if possible buy them and shut them down.

Omerta is slated for 2009. I have XP (bought a decade ago) and have managed to miss out on ME, "Media Edition", Vista, and will skip Omerta as well.

I'm happily learning Ubuntu (the most brain dead simple GUI of the Linux strains out there at the moment) and hope to have more comfort with GIMPshop, Inkscape, Compozer, Open Office free PDF generation, and a pile of audio software. I have tried to break Ubuntu. I have to try NOT to break XP. Big difference. I break it anyways! _ = )

dual booting:
1) windows first link
2) linux first link
XP first is easier for me to follow

it's a shiny piece of trash.

i'm quite happy dual booting OSX and XP on the macbook.

linux is fine too, but not enough support yet for me to care.
and being a hacker is no longer appealing to me.
Vista is The MAudio of the OS world

yeah, how is it possible that it sucks so bad? It doesn't seem to offer any genuinely new and useful features but will bring a computer to its knees that runs xp just fine. That in itself is a crime.

No discussion of Vista is complete without these links:

lol @ omerta codename for vista successor, seems its also a mmo mafia game link , .. irony?

Yo GOBOK- Sager does rule. I love my 9890 and have had no problems since I got it two years ago.
As far as Vista goes, I can't stand it. I've never worked in it but have played around wit it on other systems. If you can get a system sans the OS then stick with XP Pro.

no problems here! been running it for a few weeks on my iMac.

not really new thoughts here: i'm fine with XP Pro SP2, for me it's running stable and does exactly what i want. i'll convert to vista (but not home basic - bwah) when new software that i want isn't running on xp anymore or when i buy a new pc with vista already smeared on it.
