it dawned on me today that our dear mr. james has a discography spanning over 20 years. that does a few things for me:
*makes me feel old
*impresses me
*makes me glad that much of that work still sounds fresh
*makes me wonder where it'll lead to
the thought interested me because so many of our EM influences have died over the last few years and i don't feel like there are many contemporaries that i personally feel influenced by. what are our musical successors going to be influenced by in 20 years? will it even matter by then?

"BoC and Venetian Snares are not in the same league as aphex... squarepusher and Ae too.."
I can hit that.
- Can you recommend any Black Dog? I just have one track called "Virtual" and it was fun for awhile.
- Richard Devine is cool, but he takes too much of a "well, if I just turn on all these machines and randomize the parameters, everybody will thing I'm a post-cyberpunk deity!" Really he's just weaving formulaic IDM with a rich fabric.
- Jega is ok, but there's no craft in the timbre, at least on Geometry. It sounds second-tier to me..."my life is 1/2 music".
- What I've heard from Mouse on Mars is a joke. Am I missing something?
Ceephax is the second coming of Jimi Hendrix, but Aphex (as Universal Indicator) rivals him at his own game, and it's his acid that's good. His IDM is just good, not stellar.
Djugel, You must admit that Venetian Snares is the master of his own realm.

BYTES by Black Dog Productions. It's hard to recommend a paticular song because the album is a bit confusing.. they mix multiple songs into one track.. it's a collection of small vinyl relases... kind of like Ae's Incunabula... B12's ElectroSoma...
this track is kinda like the "alberto balsalm" of the album... or something like that,. i love the clever simpleness of the chord progression of the first track ont he album... very influential to me.

I like almost all of his stuff except SAW1. In particular: Melodies from Mars, the Ventolin remixes, Donkey Rhubarb, and Hangable Autobulb. he's definitely got his own sound and yeah that is too rare of a thing. however, the tracks of his I enjoy the most follow a sort of "colorful" phase that sort of parallels stuff Autechre did from Tri Repetae until LP5 (incl. EPs) really comfy - sincere and funny at the same time, like an old friend. beautifully ugly without making some kind of statement about it.
I think drukqs is great, piano tracks and all. In fact my brother just gave me his copy because he doesn't listen to it anymore and I need to rip that because that sounds pretty tasty right now.

the new black dog LP is rad. plaid was a part of black dog for alot of the good early material. i think the new black dog is a different line-up.
