it dawned on me today that our dear mr. james has a discography spanning over 20 years. that does a few things for me:
*makes me feel old
*impresses me
*makes me glad that much of that work still sounds fresh
*makes me wonder where it'll lead to
the thought interested me because so many of our EM influences have died over the last few years and i don't feel like there are many contemporaries that i personally feel influenced by. what are our musical successors going to be influenced by in 20 years? will it even matter by then?

djugel: um, is what i said allowed if i change it to say that one thing i don't think makes aphex special is his live gigs? (as opposed to kid606, for example). i agree with your point overall, i was just responding to the previous kid606 haters, to point out what i consider a good aspect of the lad.
quip: yeah, sorry to spark a rant. i dig what you are saying about the media and i guess being in london helps on that front - but i think it's probably more to do with their often pretty narrow appreciation of musical genres. maybe he is more media savvy. i guess i just thought it was a bit of an unfounded north / south comment...blah

totally. you can broadcast an opinion on anything the world over. it becomes less like sharing and more like 1000 people on 1000 soap boxes.

sam i do normally do make ill founded north vs south comments. actually they are quite founded. never ask me about the gig i did in mile end. or the fight i had in victoria park the day after. ;-)
i am with you on kid 606 tho hes great at moving a crowd, and i look forward to his set at bangface. i done the sound for him in leeds and he is concienciouis, friendly and genuinely passionate about what he does.
i think aphex did break out of the just using synths for sounds. he samples alot out of context. and there is a humanity and humour in his music.
i like music with soul and i think thats what alot of music, both electronic and otherwise lacks. i spent a whole day listening to dance music yesterday. alot of dj producer stuff. i was trying to steal ideas for some fetivals gigs - big beats, break downs and all that. technically it was brilliant but never once was i moved emotionally. and i think thats where people like aphex and mike paradinas really hit the nail on the head. they move you emotionally and you can dance to some of it. the best of both worlds.
