I should be getting a motorbike soon so i need a bag i can carry on my back that has either compartments( internal or external) or dividers so i can seperate my synth(s) and drum machine from the other gear.Padded would be good but i have plenty of bubble wrap to protect the gear so not necessary. The bag needs to be durable, strong and comfortable to wear with plenty of room and outer pockets to store things like power supplies etc.I've been looking at military backpacks which seem ideal but i don't how suitable thy would be for transporting gear.I don't want a branded gig bag.I already have a novation gigbag anyway but it's too small.I want something less conspicuous anyway.

So what do you recommend? The more compartments the better.Rucksack seems like the best option as it would be multiuse but which one?Something with compartments would be good.Is there anything like that other than the novation/m-audio gigbags?

It would need to be at least 2ft in height and wide enough for 15' laptop

Cheers

If you want to haul some larger keyboards around in addition to just a laptop, this looks like the ticket: link

Full disclosure: I'm doing a gig with the guy who owns this company tomorrow (Saturday), backing him up on keyboards, at the Maker Faire in San Mateo (we go on around 6PM on the bicycle-powered stage, if you want to check it out).

He says that either his Xtracycle bike, or his "Mundo" bike would easily haul my 61-key Novation keyboard as well as my keyboard stand, laptop table, laptop, and drum seat. I am definitely getting one.

I was thinking about getting a hiking backpack to put all my gear in. It'd probably need a bit of work trying to pad it enough so knobs wouldn't snap off inside, though. Let us know if you figure something out and please post pics.

Thanks for the tips tylth.I went and checked out a snowboarding place today and found the perfect bag. It's a Lichfield Voyager 60+20.Here's a pic link Had a quick search online but i can't find them so you may have to go to a real store to find one. It's the perfect bag for my needs, plenty of pockets for my stuff, even has straps inside for a synth. At first i didn't think it was ldeep enough but then i found that the bottom section could be unzipped internally to increase the depth of the bag.Sweet! There are two seperate backpacks and the front one would be ideal for a laptop or drum machine. It can either be used as a backpack, carried by your side or slung over your shoulder with the strap. It's like having four bags in one.The backpack straps are really good quality with plenty pf padding.there's a frame in the back so it's going to take some weight.Tripnik i don't have a working camera atm but i am planning to get one so i can post some pics if you like.i'd say go check some out if you can but yes, there are bags that are ideal for gigging

you're welcome. glad it seems like you found the right one

It's a good bag. However(!),my friend has a proper military backpack which has seperate compartments inside so i'm going to check it out, sounds like it can carry more gear than the bag i got, also has detachable side pockets.I'll post info later.Tripnik if you still want me to post pics i can,i'm going to pack my gear into the bag soon so i can take some shots if ya like.

just take the pics i am keen on some bagporn also

there are great leather sissy bar bags that might be large enough. just go on ebay and search for sissy bar leather and one should pop up. I used to drop ship those and they are great because not only are they large, but they're also waterproof....pretty cheap too...I sold our model for around 55-65$ they also had two large pockets and side pockets perfect for mics, ac adapters, cords, etc.

Bagpron, that's a new one on me hehe!I'll put some pics up soon.

i keep the kleenex ready.

(NOW that's a turn in the WRONG direction)

yesterday i was looking though a motorcycle assesoiries catalogue and saw some neat backpacks. black carbon-armoured bags of doom, assumably protecting your gear like a wolfmother protects her babies.

Better late than never as they say! Here are some pics of the bag loaded with gear link

There is a 15' laptop, korg emx, ther R3 is sat on top of those which is why it's wrapped. In the second bag which detaches is the korg pad kontrol and audio interface and in the top section are all the cables. I was surprised at just how much i could get in the bag. I even got an RS7000 in it and that's the size of a turntable! I since got an ESX as well and will be using that instead of a laptop for now. Laptops are great but i think they are too fragile for live gigging. The electribes are built like tanks.

Calm down tylth!

i love my Freitag bag. the model i use to take all my gear on airplanes is called the renegade. it's big, super durable and modular. here is someone's bag from flickr...
