I'm enjoy playing with my new laptop and think it's time to get my microKontrol out but when I plug it in all I get is a "low power" message...
I've read other people have this issue, is vista just really rubbish? Can't even pump enough power out of the usb!!

Not sure about Vista, but in XP there is a USB power setting that might help fix your problem.
In XP, it's under control panel>System>Hardware(tab)>Device Manager.
In Device Mgr, double click on your USB hub, click to the Power Management tab, and deselect the "Allow the computer to turn off....." button.
Keep in mind that this might be completely different from Vista, but I think it might help you.

My akai mpd16 also didn't work with Vista. That was about 6 months ago that I last tried. I downgraded my laptop to XP and it worked fine.
I'd say google it. Sometimes you can find a fix or workaround in some obscure forum. Good luck!
