So, I'm trying to plan a cross country move, and I've got about 130 inches of LPs to move. Anybody got any experience doing this sort of thing? Can anybody recommend a decent, cheap container, or have any good advice?

yeah boxes from the liquor store
free.
flashy
shabby shiek!

try to find boxes in one size and then a bunch in a second size
use the double wall approach and fill the room between walls with some rags, or paper balls ...
much safer than a separate box

130 inches / 12 inches? = around 10 records?

I don't know, I haven't done the calculations on how many records that it means I have. I just measured how much solid, packed, shelf space they were taking up. They are vertically shelved, packed just tight enough that I can still flip through them.

and good idea about the liquor store, those boxes have to be pretty strong to hold bottles.

um...you guys forgetting about the classic milk crates?
you can usually snag them from outside the local market.
they're the perfect fit and super cheap.

rubbermaid style bins are on sale in the spring at your local walmart or comparable store.
i just got one for gigging (30 gal) for under 8$. I'm sure you can find one in LP size.

actually, most of them have a notice on them that use by anyone other than a dairyman is a crime, etc. etc. I asked a bunch about them, but no one has ever given me any after years of asking!
yeah, you just gotta steal dem milkcrates. I got a couple.
I also found that a shopping cart was great for moving my records. I returned it to its owner about 6 months after the move so there's no burden on my conscience.
I know you aren't going to take that advice because you are on somewhat a higher moral road than I but I just thought I'd throw that out there ;)

lol@my moral road. yeah right!
but seriously i'd have to steal like 5-6 shopping carts or 10-15 milk crates!
I'm gonna try to get to a liquor store today. I live in a "dry town," so I have to drive to the City Limits Liquor Store. I'm happy about moving, haha.

yeah it probably isn't the best solution for you since you are moving cross-country. we moved about 10 miles so we took about 3 trips and each trip the shopping cart played a major role. super handy. almost all my vinyl fit into it, though, so it won't work for everyone.
I think those rubbermaid ones are a good call. I've got one in my closet and it's pretty durn sturdy. I can't vouch for the liquor store boxes but it would make sense that they'd work well since they are used to carry heavy bottles and stuff. I was just watching a National Geographic thing on corrugated cardboard boxes and it's pretty amazing how strong those are when packed well.

we have some boxes at our store from uhaul that we use. they're the perfect size. too bad you aren't closer, i could give you a pallette of them. also, try bags unlimited- they have LP moving/storage boxes. there also exist corrugated plastic storage boxes that are super durable, tho i don't know where to get them. you could also look into getting LP crates, but people usually want ~$15 each for them...

The problem is I need smaller boxes. If I pack too much stuff in, they get way too heavy, too fast. They also start to weigh so much that an incredibly strong box is required. I'm guessing I don't want more than about 50 boxes in there. I'm moving with ABF Relocubes, btw. So no heat or air and a 2600mi trip!

there are these pizza box things from bags unlimted link
they don't get too heavy. totally full with records they should be about 14lbs.
