There are joyful rabbit holes, like the kind where you can spend hours discovering a new genre of music. On the flipside, there are the kind that have you ripping your hair out trying to find a solution to a problem, which yields yet more problems and searching. In the interest of potentially saving someone else from a similar fate, I'm posting my findings about a particular issue regarding the Reaktor Player 6 (64bit) not showing up as a plugin in Ableton Live.

There are so many threads on this issue, but most were outdated and not relevant. In the end, the solution was found on a non-music forum. Please note that this pertains to Windows.

First, it's important to point out that if you're using Ableton 64 bit, you need to be using Reaktor Player 64 bit.

Second, it was pointed out by Native Instruments that Visual Basic C++ 2015 Update is required to run Reaktor products. That alone may not be sufficient to get things working for you, it wasn't for me.

It was then that I found this Microsoft thread which outlined some detailed steps on resolving a pesky Windows update issue. I am taking some liberty with copy/pasting the fix here, in the event that the above thread goes missing at any point. Credit is due to KeoThy at Microsoft's support forum.

* Open Command Prompt as Adminstrator
* Type mkdir C:tmp and Enter
* Type mkdir C:tmptmp and Enter
* Type move "CrogramDataPackage Cache3ACBF3890FC9C8A6F3D2155ECF106028E5F55164packagesPatchx64Windows8.1-KB2999226-x64.msu" C:tmp
* Type expand -F:* C:tmpWindows8.1-KB2999226-x64.msu C:tmptmp
* Type dism /online /add-package /packagepath:c:tmptmpWindows8.1-KB2999226-x64.cab
* Wait for DISM completed

Many people recommended simply doing a Windows Update until all updates were installed. Personally, given Microsoft's horrid telemetry policy I have disabled Windows Updates entirely and elected to ignore Windows 10. If you don't harbor such views you may have an easier time simply doing a Windows Update.

Good luck!
